CBD Dog Treat Recipe

Eden's Herbals CBD dog treatsWoof. Woof. Woof. That's usually the sound of your dog wanting a treat or something to put in their belly. Instead of reaching for expensive fillers where you're unsure about the ingredients, why don't you try CBD dog treats? They're easy to make, and our CBD is organically grown from American-made hemp.

We'll cover the value of adding CBD to your favorite buddy's treats in this post. We'll also go over why CBD is so good for your dog. Finally, we'll list our favorite CBD-infused recipes so you can make your own CBD dog treat.

How Does CBD Help My Dog?

Hemp (Cannabis Sativa) has been used for fabrics, food, oil, and medicinal purposes by humans for at least 3,000 years. Only recently did scientists isolate the chemicals components responsible for hemp's medical power. The two most important (and potent!) components found in hemp are THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol).

While THC is known as the psychoactive component, CBD is just as potent - but doesn't make you "high." These two "ingredients" interact with our ECS (endocannabinoid system) to produce its therapeutic qualities. The good news is your dog also has an ECS system! And it responds just as well to CBD as you do!

What Science Says About Giving My Dog CBD?

In one groundbreaking study by Cornell University, researchers showed that hemp oil helped lower pain in dogs with arthritis. Another study demonstrated that in dogs treated with placebo vs. CBD oil, the CBD oil class showed a "significant" decrease in pain in dogs with osteoarthritis (OA).

Can I put CBD In Dog Food?

Yes. Putting CBD into your dog food is an ideal delivery method. While some dogs may like the taste of CBD, many don't. Dogs are carnivorous by nature, so feeding them a plant-based oil or powder may not be the easiest way to give this nutrient-dense supplement. If you're feeding your dog a high-quality diet, you can mix it in their bowl, and they won't even notice it.

How Much CBD Should I Use For My Dog?

As discussed, just like humans, every dog has an ECS system. Your dog's ECS responds to the cannabidiol in much the same way we do. Based on that, adjust your dog's dosage based on his size. If you take 1 ml a day, for example, and weigh 150 pounds, give your dog half that amount.

One note, consider giving your dog a Full-Spectrum CBD oil supplement. By law, CBD cannot be sold if it's over 0.3% THC. This means as long as you buy from a lab-certified CBD manufacturer, your dog will not get "high." They will, however, benefit from the full potency of the cannabis plant - meaning your dog's receiving the full benefits of the plant.

If you're still unsure about giving your dog THC, we've included a THC-Free CBD dog treat recipe for you. Just know that your dog may not receive the full benefits as they would with a Full-Spectrum CBD oil.

Can My Dog Overdose On CBD Treats?

woman feeding dog a treatNo, your dog will not overdose on CBD. However, when making CBD treats, follow the recipes below to get the best results. If you want to add or subtract CBD over time, that's fine. One thing you won't want to give your dog, in any form, is xylitol. Do not put this in your dog treats. Xylitol is highly toxic to dogs!

Other foods to avoid giving your dog include the following:

  • Mushrooms
  • Raw Onions
  • Cherries
  • Avocadoes
  • Asparagus
  • Grapes

Although these foods won't kill your dog, they could make them sick. CBD, on the other hand, is considered safe and well-tolerated. As always, check with your veterinarian before starting your dog on a CBD regimen.
