CBD for Dogs with Cancer

Dog at vet officeCBD's popularity continues to increase at a major pace, with as many as 33% of American adults trying the substance.

Yet, its popularity is now so great that it is important to realize that it is no longer just humans benefiting from CBD: Animals are as well.

A variety of studies have come out that have examined the impact of CBD on our animal companions. The bulk of these studies were conducted on dogs with positive results. While more studies may be needed, they have indicated the potential for CBD to help our four-legged friends.

Unfortunately, one of the most common deaths of dogs is cancer. Statistics indicate that one in four pets will eventually get cancer, making it one of the leading killers of our pets. Human caretakers are always looking for ways to care for their pets and help them recover from their illnesses. As such, it is worth asking: What can CBD do for dogs, and specifically, what can it do for dogs who may have cancer?

How Does CBD Work?

word CBD Oil in sunsetCBD's impact is tied to the component's impact on our body's Endocannabinoid System. Everyone - human and animal - has an Endocannabinoid System. This system produces cannabinoids internally. These naturally produced cannabinoids then bind to one of two types of cannabinoid receptors. This, in turn, reacts to a variety of physical and emotional sensations in our bodies.

The system works in a similar way, regardless of if we are discussing humans or animals. That's not to say that the systems are identical, but they operate with the same basic principle. Currently, CBD has not been found to be a viable treatment for humans with cancer. Yet, there is evidence to suggest that it may have positive effects.

November 2020 review examined the available literature and found that CBD may hold potential for cancer treatment. This could potentially help to slow the growth of cancer cells. It called for more research into the topic. Other studies have also found that CBD can help people deal with pain, including pain caused by cancer and cancer treatments

CBD may also be helpful in humans to reduce the levels of nausea that they suffer when ingesting cancer drugs.

How Can CBD Help Dogs?

Research has been conducted which shows that CBD can help dogs by reducing their levels of pain. Also, by helping to eliminate seizures in areas where more traditional mediation has failed.

This evidence exists on multiple fronts. First: Cancer is a very painful disease for anyone, and this certainly applies to dogs. Some evidence has found that CBD can help dogs who are suffering from cancer by relieving their pain or relieving the pain caused by cancer treatments.

One study - as noted by the American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation - found that CBD caused a decrease in cancerous cell reproduction in dogs. This reduction occurred with CBD-rich forms of CBD oil, indicating the specific type of CBD that might help our pets.

Second, like in humans, CBD may be able to help give a sense of calm and peace to our dogs. Some studies, and ample anecdotal evidence, have found that CBD can help dogs relax and let go of anxiety. Indeed, CBD has been found to help reduce anxiety among dogs

As a disclaimer, you should never use CBD in place of another sort of medication. CBD is not currently available as a medication to treat cancer directly.

Indeed, there is only one FDA-approved medication that is CBD-based at all, and that is for young children who suffer from rare seizure disorders. As such, you should speak with your doctor before starting your dog on any other medication.

What About Side Effects?

dog in the forestJust like in humans, some dogs do experience side effects related to taking CBD. These include dry mouth, nausea, and sleepiness. These side effects are worth monitoring but have generally been found to be relatively minor and tolerable in animals, just like in humans.

Most of the time, these side effects are normal and relatively minor. However, if you are concerned, you should speak with your veterinarian. They may recommend other medications to help manage these side effects, or they may recommend that you stop giving your dog the medication.

Other Considerations

Once you have spoken to your veterinarian about putting your dog on CBD, there are a few other considerations to keep in mind.

First, only purchase CBD that is specially formulated for dogs. CBD for humans may contain additives or other products that are not healthy for animals, and they will not be designed with their digestive systems in mind. You want to get the best CBD oil for dogs with cancer from a reputable CBD brand, like Eden's Herbals!

Make sure to do your homework about what kind of CBD works best for your dog. This means that you should ensure that the CBD you are purchasing has a Certificate of Analysis which clearly indicates what products are in the product you are purchasing.

Make sure to monitor your dog for any side effects. In order to mitigate any of these potential problems, start with a low dose of CBD and watch for improvements. If you don't see the desired results, slowly begin to increase the dosage until you do.

More research will answer any questions, including how much CBD is necessary to make a difference for humans or dogs, what it can help, and what types are best. Fortunately, future research will likely give us the answers to these very important questions.
